Inisiasi Laboratorium Aktuaria, FEBI UIN KHAS Jember Kunjungi Departemen Sains Aktuaria ITS

SURABAYA, September 16, 2026 – The Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business (FEBI) of Kiai Haji Achmad Siddiq State Islamic University (UIN KHAS) Jember conducted an official visit and benchmarking activity at the Department of Actuarial Science, Faculty of Science and Data Analytics, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. The delegation was led by the Head of the Department of Islamic Economics, Dr. H. MF. Hidayatullah, S.H.I., M.S.I., and received by the Head of the Department of Actuarial Science at ITS, R. Mohamad Atok, M.Si., Ph.D., together with faculty members from the Actuarial Science study program.

The FEBI UIN KHAS Jember delegation consisted of seven representatives, including laboratory heads, lecturers, and educational staff from across the faculty. During the visit, the delegation engaged in knowledge-sharing sessions and discussions on various aspects of institutional development, including organizational systems and governance, laboratory management, the development of an actuarial science laboratory, and the mapping of research topics pursued by each institution.

The benchmarking activities also covered the implementation of laboratories to support student learning, the development of research and community service roadmaps, and the expansion of collaborative partnerships with institutions at both national and international levels.

FEBI UIN KHAS Jember initiated this visit to the Department of Actuarial Science at ITS as part of its preparations to develop actuarial science, particularly in the field of Islamic insurance, or takaful. The experience of ITS in building an integrated ecosystem for education, research, and institutional collaboration is expected to serve as a valuable reference for establishing and operating the Actuarial Laboratory at FEBI UIN KHAS Jember.

In his opening remarks, Dr. H. MF. Hidayatullah, S.H.I., M.S.I., explained that the visit was intended not only to strengthen institutional relations but also to provide an opportunity to learn from the experiences and expertise of the Department of Actuarial Science at ITS.

“Our first intention in making this visit is to strengthen institutional ties, and our second is to learn and gain valuable insights in various areas, both academic and non-academic. We want to understand how laboratory management, scientific development, research, and community service can be developed sustainably,” he stated.

He further emphasized that FEBI UIN KHAS Jember needed a range of references and best practices to prepare for the development of actuarial science, particularly because the field is closely connected to management, economics, accounting, the financial services industry, and the evolving demands of the labor market.

Meanwhile, R. Mohamad Atok, M.Si., Ph.D., Head of the Department of Actuarial Science at ITS, presented various strategies and development programs implemented by the department. He explained that the department's work programs were designed to support ITS's vision of becoming an inclusive and relevant higher education institution, while fostering institutional development that responds to the growing demand for actuarial professionals in Indonesia.

In his presentation, R. Mohamad Atok also discussed the development of institutional governance at ITS, particularly the implementation of a centralized administrative service system at the university level. This arrangement enables departments and study programs to focus more effectively on education, teaching and learning, research, and academic development.

“Study programs are directed to become Centers for Education and Learning, with their primary focus on the development of education and learning. Meanwhile, administrative services can be managed more centrally,” he explained.

In addition to governance, the Department of Actuarial Science at ITS shared its experiences in curriculum development, the advancement of actuarial knowledge, laboratory management, research and community service, and the establishment of collaborative networks with various stakeholders.

This benchmarking visit also reflects FEBI UIN KHAS Jember's broader commitment to strengthening institutional governance, advancing academic disciplines, and building collaborative partnerships with universities and other institutions.

Through this initiative, the proposed establishment of the Actuarial Laboratory is expected to mark a progressive step toward integrating actuarial science with the perspectives of Islamic economics and business, particularly in advancing research, education, and professional practices in Islamic insurance and takaful.
